Hair Porosity Test: Find Your Type at Home in One Wash
One wash, no kit, no guessing. The air-dry test tells you what your hair can actually absorb — and what to stop buying.

You want to moisturise your hair properly, but you are not sure what it actually needs. You keep hearing about porosity and it is still vague. This guide fixes that: one test you can run on your next wash day, and a clear read on what the result means for coily, curly and wavy hair.
What hair porosity actually is
Porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and hold water. It comes down to the state of the cuticle — the shingle-like outer layer wrapped around every strand.
There are three types:
- Low porosity — cuticles lie flat and closed. Water struggles to get in, but once it does, it stays.
- Medium porosity — a working balance between absorbing and retaining.
- High porosity — cuticles are raised and open. Water rushes in and evaporates just as fast.
None of these is damage in itself. Porosity is partly genetic, partly the result of colour, heat and years of manipulation. High porosity is more common on hair that has been lifted or relaxed; low porosity is common on virgin coily hair.
The air-dry test
This is the most reliable test you can do without a lab, and the only one that uses your hair in its normal state rather than a single strand in a glass of water.
- Wash your hair as you usually do, with no conditioner left in.
- Squeeze it out gently with a towel — no rubbing, no product.
- Let it air-dry with no heat, and note how long it takes.
Read the result:
- Still damp after several hours → low porosity. Water went in slowly and is in no rush to leave.
- Dry in a normal amount of time → medium porosity.
- Dry within 30 to 60 minutes → high porosity. Nothing is holding the water in.
Two checks that confirm it
The product absorption check. Apply a light moisturising milk or cream to dry hair. Does it sit on the surface and feel greasy? Low porosity. Does it absorb normally? Medium. Does it disappear instantly, as if the hair drank it? High porosity.
Everyday observation. Low porosity hair feels soft but is stubborn to moisturise. Medium porosity hair is easy to look after and holds a treatment well. High porosity hair feels dry and rough, dehydrates quickly and needs richer products more often.
Why this changes what you buy
Almost every "this product did nothing for me" story is a porosity mismatch. Heavy butters on low porosity hair never penetrate — they coat. Light sprays on high porosity hair evaporate before they help. The product was not bad; it was aimed at the wrong cuticle.
You do not need a scientific test to know your hair. Observe it. The next wash day will tell you.
